Drizzy Loves His Country Muffins
Who: Drake
What: Light Dreams & Nightmares Tour
When: Friday, October 29th, 2010 at 8:00 pm
Where: Reliant Arena, Houston TX
Why: this is HIS city.
"I'm finally home..."
Drake was estatic and the whole city of Houston felt it Friday night for his "Light Dreams & Nightmares" tour. With the show being opened by the city's own Trae, fellow Young Money artist Tyga (who thinks watchin porn on your iPad is "Really Raw"), and even a VERY unexpected performance from Johnny Dang, it was definitely a preparation for something LIVE. When Drake came on stage, everything was LIVE. LIVE guitarists. LIVE fireworks. LIVE drummer. LIVE background singer. LIVE DJ. LIVE light show. Drake sang LIVE. And shoot, his trademark hand was LIVE and definitely in full effect.
He performed all of the chart topping singles along with every song on the platinum selling album "Thank Me Later," and shouted out his home away from home, Houston, in every song. Legendary Bun B came out to perform "What Up" and "Put it Down", while labelmates Tyga and Gudda Gudda came out to perform "Bedrock." Drake invited a birthday girl on stage, kissed her, and handed her a Blackberry courtesy of sponsor AT&T (talk about product placement), and paid homage and tribute to Pimp C, Aaliyah, and incarcerated mentor, Lil Wayne.
His (and mine as well) favorite part of the show was when the turned the lights on, saying, "I love this, because I get see each and every one of my fans." He shouted out what seemed to be about 50+ fans, making a general and personal connection with them. At one point, fans started throwing bracelets at him (not panties?), while he told each section how happy he was to see them. He pulled out his phone to show Lil Wayne on video how much his fans missed him.
The most memorable part of the show had to be when he made Jas climb on stage (telling him "You gotta be more athletic, Jas), announced him as the reason why he's signed to Young Money, recited a cute little poem, and tossed him the keys to a Lamborghini as a gift for his birthday. All the while, he continued to remind Houston why he loves being here. "It's my favorite f*cking city." Drake should take the same energy and affection he brings to Houston to award shows. He never appears that excited unless he's here. Home.
What will keep Drake around for the long run is his ability to maintain the attitude of a fresh new artist. He still sings live. He goes out to all capacity like it's a rock concert. He feeds well off the energy of the stage and band and creates enough of his own. His music brings people of all ages and colors together. No kidding. I saw what appeared to be a 50 something year old white lady singing "Show Me a Good Time" word for word, along with 20 and 30 something year old men with DO RIGHT AND KILL EVERYTHING tee shirts on. The only other fans I've seen that loyal is Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Prince, and Michael Jackson. Aspiring artists, take note! You can hate him if you want, but it's much easier to love. He's a star, and he performed under a full moon. Perfect. Way to go LIVE, Drake.
